Underage betting

Betting is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. How we enforce that, and what parents can do.

Strictly 18+

It is an offence for a person under 18 to open a betting account, and an offence for us to accept one. Accounts found to belong to a minor are closed immediately, all stakes are returned, and all winnings are forfeited.

How we verify age

Date of birth is collected at sign-up and verified electronically against identity records when you register, before you can place a bet. Where an electronic check cannot confirm it, we require a government-issued identity document. We also re-check where account activity suggests the holder may not be the person who registered.

What happens if a minor opens an account

  • The account is closed immediately on discovery.
  • All stakes are returned to the source of funds.
  • All winnings are forfeited. A minor cannot profit from an unlawful account.
  • Where the account was opened using an adult’s identity, that adult’s accounts are reviewed and may also be closed.
  • The matter is reported to our regulator where required.

For parents and guardians

The most effective protection is at device level. Filtering software can block gambling sites across a whole household, and it works whether or not a child is motivated to get around it. Widely used options include Net Nanny, Qustodio and Family Zone; most operating systems and home routers also have parental controls built in at no cost.

  • Keep payment cards, banking apps and identity documents out of reach and out of autofill.
  • Do not let a child watch you bet, and never place a bet on a child’s behalf. It is unlawful and it normalises it.
  • Check devices for betting apps, and check whether a browser has a saved login.
  • Talk about it. The research consistently finds early exposure is the strongest single predictor of later harm.

Our advertising obligations

We do not advertise in media directed at people under 18, we do not use cartoons, mascots, current sporting identities or anything else likely to appeal primarily to children, and we do not advertise during the restricted periods around live sport broadcasts. Every advertisement we run carries the 18+ mark.

Report a suspected underage account

Tell us. Contact support with whatever detail you have: a name, an email address, a phone number. We investigate every report, we act quickly, and we will not disclose who told us.
